Tuxedo Park is a village located in Orange County, New York about 40 miles northwest of Manhattan. Tuxedo Park is also part of the larger town of Tuxedo. The name Tuxedo is derived from the Lenni-Lenape Indian name for a nearby lake. It was once a prominent getaway for high society New Yorkers. And yes, a tuxedo takes its name from Tuxedo, New York. According to the story, Griswold Lorillard (of the tobacco family) wore a tuxedo for the first time in the United States to the Autumn Ball in the village back in 1886. The evening attire thus became known as a “tuxedo.”
